Greenfish DataMiner 2008 Help - Introduction

This software can be used for recovering lost data from optical disks, such as CD's or DVD's. It should support all types of optical disks and uses an intelligent heuristic to recognize files which cannot be seen using a file manager. You may need Greenfish DataMiner if you have a scratched or damaged disk, one with a corrupt or unknown file system or a rewritable disk which has accidentally been overwritten. The program can recognize BMP, ICO, CUR, ANI, AVI, CDA, PAL, QCP, RMI, WAV, RIFF, 7Z, BZ2, CAB, GZ, HQX, NRI, RAR, RPM, SIT, SQX, TAR, UHA, ZIP, ZOO, AIFF, AMR, AU, FLAC, MID, MP3, OGG, DOC, XLS, PPT, CHM, MDB, PDF, PSD, PSP, SIB, SQLITE, EXE, DLL, CHR, BGI, CLASS, DCU, ELF, GM6, PPU, TI calculator, RES, TLB, TPU, DCX, EMF, GIF, JPG, PCX, PNG, TIF, WMF, ASF, RA, RM, MOV, MPG, SWF, VOB, LNK and SFK files, and various types of text files, including source codes, HTML and LaTeX files.

Note that the recovered files may not be intact, they may be rendered unusable. If Greenfish DataMiner extracts some unusable files for you, please feel free to contact us and report the error. We will provide you support in any cases. You may also suggest recognition of more file types.

How to recover lost data

  1. Create an image of the damaged disk
If possible, create a disk image file with Greenfish DataMiner. Do not use other image creator applications, as they may not take all accessible data on the disk into account! (Most of them only save the valid sessions to the image file.)
Image creation will take a long time, e.g. an estimated 10 min. for DVD's, but will make recognition very fast.

CD-images are stored by Greenfish DataMiner in one .iso file. DVD images are stored in multiple files, such as .iso, .iso02, .iso03, ... Should you get multiple *.iso* files, you will only have to mount the first file (*.iso) in Greenfish DataMiner for recognition.

  2. Load the disk into Greenfish DataMiner
If you have created an image of the disk, choose Image | Open image file and select the image. Make sure that the disk image is of type ISO, BIN or IBQ. Note that NRG or other exotic formats are not yet recognized.
Else just load the disk into the drive and choose Image | Open disk drive to select the drive letter.

  3. Run the recognition
Choose Image | Recognize files and wait until the whole disk is processed. This may take a few minutes, and may work faster if using a disk image file. If the recognition has finished, choose Accept found files.

  4. Save your project
Do not forget to save the list of recognized files as a .dm file using Project | Save project. Otherwise you will have to run the recognition again and again if you want to extract more files from the damaged disk.

  5. Extract the files you need
Select one or more recognized files from the file list. (Hold down Ctrl to select multiple files.) Choose Image | Extract and select a folder in which the files should be extracted. If you want DataMiner to group files into subfolders by extension, choose Image | Extract grouped by extension. You will be notified with a message beep when all files are extracted.

DataMiner did not find all the files I needed. What should I do?

Please contact us and tell us what type of files you are looking for. We will try to implement recognition of those files. Also contact us if you have found any bugs in the software.
