Check out each section below to find how to make Chat Transcript Manager work for you.

Getting Started

First and foremost, get going on using a text messaging application! If you're reading this, chances are you already use iChat or Adium, two of the most popular IM clients.

Next, be sure you have logging enabled in your IM client of choice. Chat transcript Manager will prompt you to turn it on in iChat if it's not already on.

Scan Your Chat Files

The first time you launch Chat Transcript Manager it will need to scan all of your existing chat files into its database. This process can take some time if you have a lot of files.

After the initial scan, Chat Transcript Manager will scan chats automatically while it's running, and then on each subsequent launch, it will scan the chat files that are new since the last scan.

Note: If for some reason you need to purge the internal database and force a rescan, you can do so by clicking "Rescan Chat Transcripts" from the General pane of the Chat Transcript Manager preferences.

Browsing and Searching

Chat Transcript Manager has powerful browsing and search capabilities. You can narrow your results by date, by chat contents, by chat participants, and of course by using a search term or terms.

Features such as "next item" buttons, highlighting, and speed make finding the information you need a breeze.

Using Chat Transcript Manager couldn't be any easier

  1. Select the timeframe you wish to search or browse
  2. Choose whether you want to include only transcripts containing Emails, Links, Pictures, or All
  3. Choose the specific buddy you want to browse or search, or leave it on the default, All
